AFDC Goaltimate
The best is yet to come!

Record interest following a shaky start
2002 looks to be another exciting year - interest in Winter
Goaltimate is nearly three times the level as last years league. Yet, it
doesn't seem so long ago that Goaltimate in Atlanta was one set of pipes and
lots of swill, with a a few odd souls dodging needles and
glass under the lights at English Park. Today over 110 AFDC'ers on 10
teams play every Saturday. Each new season the AFDC is grateful for the
continued growth in interest. Thanks to all the
players who have made it so much fun!
"AJ the Pioneer" Many
thanks to AJ for stepping up to serve as the Winter '02 Commish.
AJ brings some
excellent new ideas to the game, including adjusting the rules in
favor of the offense, gender equality, and a 2 day tournament. Some
folks have been talking for a while about shifting the balance in
goaltimate to the offense and AJ got it done. It's been said size doesn't
matter - that is more true than ever, at least on the Goalty field.
He's also tested the notion of absolute vs relative
rankings. In other words does gender really matter? We are blessed with
incredibly talented women goaltimate players who play season in and season
out - Theo Beck, Natalie Jansen, and Annie Perry, among others - and their
presence makes a huge difference.
Finally, AJ pioneered the first AFDC non-summer league
to have a 2 day EOS Tournament. Great work AJ!
An Evil Influence
For Spring League, 'Evil' Wood will serve his 2nd gig
as a Commissioner.
He caught the Goalty bug in it's formative days at Brookhaven and once
his beloved Space Monkey's won the AFDC's first Goaltimate League
(Summer '00) he's never looked back. He's been a key part of every
league since he was Commish a year ago this Winter .(another new idea)
AFDC Goalty wouldn't be what it is today without his hard work and
contributions. For Spring League, Evil expects
interest to be anywhere from 110-135 folks.
In another test
of a new idea, Spring Goalty will be played under the lights on Tue and
Wed, rather than Saturdays. He's still looking for planning feedback
(core vs draft, team size, gender mix, etc) so please be sure to share
your ideas with him
Stu starts another tradition, Natalie and Anna
step up Stu, Atlanta's first Goalty player,
was asked by the AFDC if he'd be
interested in
helping run last Summer's Goalty League. With typical enthusiasm not
only did he so, but he created a new Atlanta tradition - the Summer
Goalstice Tournament. The inaugural tournament featured 7 Atlanta teams,
as well as Salsa's friends from Tenn. It is hoped that the tourney will
expand to include other southeastern teams. Congratulations to YoGay
Bare Ass for winning the tournament in an exciting finals upset - word
around the campfire is the team took a retreat to the GA mountains in
early Feb to plot a repeat! Special thanks to
Natalie Jansen and Anna George for stepping up as
Commissioners
at critical times for AFDC Goalty. Both brought new ideas and ways of
doing things and helped spread Goalty to new players. The AFDC is
delighted these women are leading leagues as Commish! Great work Natalie
and Anna - thank you!
Four Peat
No discussion of women and ATL
Goaltimate is complete without mentioning Annie '4 Peat' Perry! The vast
AFDC archives show that she's won nearly every Goaltimate Tournament she's
played in, yet oddly enough, the database doesn't show payments for all
those leagues - surely it's simply a corrupted database. Yeah Annie!
Feedback Improves Leagues
Special thanks to those who provide feedback, heckles, and humor to the
AFDC's seasonal goalty polls. This is a new sport and a new league, so
your feedback sincerely matters, whether it's voting on team size, gender
mix, core v draft, allowing pickup, bringing new features online like
images, video or profiles, willingness to test new rules, or how your dues
are allocated among the various seasonal and long-term expenses. As we
make mistakes we want to know - if we don't learn please heckle loudly!
Rick Conner and the IGO Rick
Conner, President of the IGO (the governing body of Goaltimate), has
given significant time and his own financial resources in building the
sport around the country. In fact, it was Rick that flew Atlanta's top
women and men to the two national goaltimate tournaments. Fortunately, for
the rest of us, Brian Cornelison and Ricky Mclellen returned to Atlanta
with the fever and kits - the rest as they say is history! Brian ran the
first Goalty Hat Tourney which was a FUN mix of newer and top players.
"It Only Happens in Dreams"
Many of you know Kelly York as that smart, sweet, fast
Winona Ryder.
What you may not know is she's also just about the coolest woman
imaginable. Why you ask? Well, she and her husband-to-be Ahmet Bulbukaya are
moving to Richmond, alas, and he's also having a birthday. And (here's the
cool part) instead of buying him a shirt or some other non-sense, Kelly
went to goaltimate.com and bought Ahmet a Goalty kit. "Be still my beating
heart"
What Explains the Growth?
I don't know why Goalty's grown like it has, but
thanks from the AFDC to all the players and leaders who have made
Atlanta Goalty so much fun! It's always exciting to see new players
enjoying the game - the latest and possibly most enthusiastic being
Kathleen Quinlen! Andy Grimes - "Whatever it
Takes" Special word of thanks to Andy Grimes
from all his many friends in the
AFDC. Week in and week out for the last three years he's enthusiastically
cooked us all gourmet meals, brought us cold beverages, shared his hearty
laugh, set up fields, run pickup during weeknights, hauled trash, and done
'whatever it takes'. By the way, did you know Andy holds the record for
receiving the AFDC's oldest Rookie of the Year Award? You da man Andy -
thanks!
Help Needed! You may
have noticed a freightning trend - most of the Goalty Commishes have been
or are of Dead Horse fame. Eric Ewald and I give you our word that in the
daily, hour long instant messaging Goalty smack talk sessions, we do our
best to hold off the Dark Side, but it's not easy and we need your help!
No need to ask us if we need it - we do! Whether it's setting up and
taking down kits, leaving the fields in better condition than we found
them, or capturing images and digital video of our beloved Goalti-mates!
Thanks to one and all! See ya
around some pipes,
