Steering Committee States Women are a Top Priority

Holly Sommers will Lead the Effort

At the January 2002 Steering Committee meeting, the SC voted to establish a new position, that of Women’s Director. I am pleased and excited to have been named to this position. The promotion of the sport of ultimate to women has always been important to me and I greatly appreciate the AFDC’s active support of this initiative in Atlanta. The ultimate community in Atlanta is one of the best I have had the opportunity to be a part of and I truly feel that the AFDC as a whole can only benefit from the increased participation of women in both the Club itself and in the Club sponsored leagues and activities.

While it is the mission of the AFDC to promote the sport in general, my task will be to work in partnership with the other initiatives of the AFDC for the promotion of the sport to this specific population. Activities planned as a part of this effort include clinics designed specifically for women players, the creation of a women’s section on AFDC.com, and the resurrection of women’s play. In addition, a number of other ideas are currently being batted around to assess their feasibility and the level of interest.

As with all AFDC activities, I am actively seeking feedback from the membership on this topic and I encourage anyone with thoughts on the matter to contact me. Through the establishment of this position, the AFDC is seeking not only to increase the number of women that participate in the Club, but to improve the experience of those already involved. I look forward to working with the entire AFDC community to further this goal.
