The
Quarterly Pull FALL LEAGUEThe AFDC’s inaugural Fall League was a big success. Eight teams competed in the league, with a combined total of 143 players The Fall League final regular-season standings were as follows: Shrubbery 6 - 1 The Fall League Final Tournament was held at Grant Park on Saturday, November 1st. The semifinals featured Wicked against Functional Pieces on one side, and Team 1 versus Shrubbery in the other bracket. The final game featured regular-season champions Shrubbery against Functional Pieces. Functional Pieces started off the game on defense, but not for long: Functional Pieces stuffed the very first attempted pass and quickly put the disc in for the score. After that dramatic beginning, the two teams traded points back and forth until Shrubbery got their act together and began to pull away. By halftime the score was 9-6 in their favor, and they never looked back. The final score was 17-11, with Shrubbery taking home the trophy. A post-tournament celebration was held at Heaping Bowl and Brew. Fall League was such a success that the AFDC is strongly considering a spring league, most likely beginning in March. Steering Committee ElectionsA request for Nominations for all positions on the AFDC Steering Committee was mailed out with the July edition of The Quarterly Pull, but unfortunately, no nominations were submitted. So in order to save time, hassle, and money, the Steering Committee voted unanimously to extend the terms of all the current officers until summer of 1998, when new elections can be held. Unfortunately, Nils Turner will be unable to complete his new term as Membership Director. Nils is moving to the West Coast in November. His hard work for the club over the years is greatly appreciated, and we will all miss him. AFDC Financial UpdateThe AFDC posted revenues of $13,127.00 from Summer League dues. Expenses for the club totaled $11,054.64, leaving a budget surplus of $2,072.36. The surplus was invested in the club’s name. Summer League expenses, including costs of fields and the final season party, totaled $6,157.72. Other large club expenses include an estimated $1,600 for Winter Play at the AJCC, $1,300 for the club’s liability insurance (required by most field owners), and approximately $1,500 for newsletters. Wednesday Night PlayWednesday night pick-up has shifted to the lighted fields at the Atlanta Jewish Community Center. The AJCC is located off of Peachtree Road a few blocks north of 14th Street, behind the Beer Mug. Turn at the traffic light by the IHOP. Play begins around 7 PM, and all members are welcome. UPA NationalsThree Atlanta club teams traveled to Sarasota, Fl October 23-26 to compete in the UPA National Championships. In the Women’s Division, Ozone made their 11th straight appearance at Nationals. The team finished with a 4-2 record, narrowly missing a trip to the semifinals by a 13-15 loss to eventual Finalists Schwa from Portland. The local men’s masters team Master Blasters also went 4-2, advancing to the semis, where they lost 15-10 to Love Handlers from Texas. In the Open Divison, Chain Lightning finished with a 1-5 record, their lone victory coming against Big Ass Truck from Michigan. Winners of the UPA Nationals were as follows: Open Division - DoG (Boston) Etc.The AFDC would like to extend its sympathies to longtime members Dennis and Sharon Cryor on the loss of their infant daughter, Elizabeth Rose. Elizabeth Rose was born on September 7th and passed away on September 11th. In lieu of flowers, Sharon and Dennis ask that donations be made to Piedmont Hospital’s Neonatal ICU Education Fund, 1968 Peachtree Road N.W. Atlanta, GA 30309. Donations may also be directed to SHARE Atlanta, a support group for parents who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss. Congratulations to Matt Browher and his new wife Melissa, married on October 11th. Congratulations also to Rich Bolen and Joel Ostrow- we wish them and their respective new wives much happiness in their new life together.
